Rod Stewart Brings Down the House With “Forever Young” Performance While Accepting Lifetime Achievement Award at 2025 AMAs
Rod Stewart proved he’s still got that rock ‘n’ roll spark as he took the stage at the 2025 American Music Awards to accept the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award — and treated fans to a high-energy performance of his timeless hit “Forever Young.”
Before Stewart hit the stage, the moment turned emotional as all five of his children stepped forward to honor their legendary father. A moving tribute video followed, chronicling the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s incredible six-decade career. It was a touching prelude to what would become one of the night’s most memorable highlights.
“When I started singing in the early ’60s — way before any of you lot were here — the reason I got into it is because I had this burning ambition to sing,” Stewart told the crowd during his acceptance speech. “It’s all I wanted to do. I didn’t want to be rich or famous… and here I am, a few years later, picking up this wonderful award.”
He went on to thank the many musicians and legends who inspired his journey, including soul icons like Sam Cooke, David Ruffin, and blues great Muddy Waters. Stewart’s heartfelt gratitude was a reminder of the roots that shaped his signature sound and timeless appeal.
After accepting the award, the 79-year-old singer turned back the clock with a spirited performance of his 1988 anthem “Forever Young.” Backed by a vibrant band and dancers, Stewart danced across the stage with infectious energy, captivating the crowd and proving that age is just a number when it comes to true rock star charisma.
This appearance marked Stewart’s first performance at the AMAs in over two decades — his last being in 2004 with a rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” His return was both nostalgic and electric, offering a reminder of why he remains one of music’s most enduring icons.
The night was packed with star power from start to finish. Host Jennifer Lopez not only kept the show moving but also delivered one of several high-profile performances. Other performers included Benson Boone, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Gloria Estefan, Lainey Wilson, and Reneé Rapp.
Another standout moment came from Janet Jackson, who returned to the stage for her first televised performance in seven years. The pop legend was honored with the prestigious Icon Award, following in the footsteps of her 2018 Billboard Music Awards recognition.
In terms of winners, Billie Eilish dominated the night, taking home Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for Hit Me Hard and Soft, and Song of the Year for “Birds of a Feather.” Gracie Abrams earned the title of New Artist of the Year, while Kendrick Lamar led the night in nominations, with 10 nods overall.
The 2025 AMAs, produced by Dick Clark Productions and hosted at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, were a celebration of music past, present, and future — and Rod Stewart’s unforgettable moment was a shining example of that legacy in action.
