Billy Joel Cancels Remaining Tour Dates Following Diagnosis of Rare Brain Disorder
Music icon Billy Joel has officially canceled all remaining tour dates after being diagnosed with a rare neurological condition known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The decision follows medical advice, as ongoing performances were reportedly intensifying his symptoms.
Joel’s last performance was on February 22 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. A few weeks later, he announced a four-month break to focus on recovery from an unspecified medical issue. That condition has now been publicly identified as NPH—an often misdiagnosed brain disorder that mimics symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” Joel said in a heartfelt statement. “Thank you for understanding.”
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, NPH occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain’s ventricles, causing pressure that leads to symptoms such as difficulty walking, memory loss, and bladder control issues. It affects approximately 0.2% of older adults, and fewer than 20% of cases are properly diagnosed.
Joel’s doctors noted that live performances had been aggravating his condition, causing problems with hearing, vision, and balance. He is now undergoing targeted physical therapy and may require shunt surgery, a common treatment for NPH that helps drain excess fluid from the brain.
“Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health,” the statement added.
Fans who purchased tickets to the now-canceled shows do not need to take any action—refunds will be automatically processed to the original method of payment.
As of now, it’s unclear whether Billy Joel will eventually return to touring. For the time being, the focus remains on his health, rest, and full recovery. Fans around the world have taken to social media to send messages of support and well-wishes to the beloved Piano Man during this difficult chapter.
