Eminem Asked Mariah Carey to Play His Mom in 8 Mile—But It Didn’t Go as Planned

In a surprising revelation from TFU Podcast, music producer Damion “Damizza” Young unveiled that Eminem once pursued pop icon Mariah Carey to play his mother in the iconic 2002 film 8 Mile

Despite being just four years older than Eminem (she was 56 and he was 52 at the time of the podcast)  Em reportedly insisted:

“I want you to play my mother.”

According to Damizza, Carey was initially intrigued when she learned the offer was for a movie—but changed her mind after realizing the nature of the role.

“She did not like that s— at all. Her insecurities kicked in big time,” Damizza shared

The role ultimately went to Oscar-winner Kim Basinger, who took on the part of Stephanie Smith with critical acclaim

  • Directed by Curtis Hanson and released in 2002, 8 Mile dramatizes Eminem’s struggle in Detroit’s underground rap scene .

  • The film earned $242.9 million worldwide, and won Eminem an Oscar for “Lose Yourself”
