Gene Simmons Explains Why He Hated Flea’s Bass Playing

Why Gene Simmons dislikes Flea’s bass playing was revealed in a Guitar World interview. The KISS bassist added, “All due respect, but that music is intended to show off how well you play – but I don’t care about that”. Write a decent simple tune or riff is toughest. That’s hard.”

Jaco Pastorius and jazz artists are outstanding bassists, he added. Or Flea, who is great on his instrument but I can’t recall what he plays, and I don’t like bass slaps.” Simmons was criticized for his ‘Dancing with the Stars’ guest judge comments this month. While judging Hair Metal Night on October 9, the singer made comments regarding contestants’ looks.

After Danny Amendola and Witney Carson danced the Paso Doble to Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Simmons: “This is new to me, and it’s hard to tell which one is hotter. You’re next to one of the world’s most gorgeous women, Danny.”

Simmons said, “You fogged up my glasses” and, “You move me, not just with your gyrations and so on, but your beautiful face and how you were into the emotion of it” after Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong performed a Jive to Twisted Sister’s ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It.

According to the Daily Mail, Gene stood by his statements after the outcry. Explaining, “I stand by every word I said. My time was excellent. Contestants excelled. Fantastic show. Take in the show. Very enjoyable. All have something to share. Take in the show. Very enjoyable. Everyone enjoyed it.”

Contestants danced to hair metal hits in that episode. Joel Hoekstra did a solo to a KISS cover of ‘Rock and Roll All Nite.’ Included were Poison, Warrant, Twisted Sister, Bon Jovi, and others.
