Reneé Rapp Says She’d Never Play Elsa in a Live-Action ‘Frozen’: “She’s Kind of Annoying”
Reneé Rapp isn’t afraid to speak her mind — even when it comes to beloved Disney princesses.
The rising pop star and breakout actress, who stunned audiences with her turn as Regina George in the 2024 Mean Girls movie musical, sat down for a no-holds-barred interview with comedian Ziwe this week. During the chat, Ziwe playfully asked Rapp if she’d ever consider playing Elsa in a potential live-action Frozen film — and her answer was refreshingly blunt.
“No,” Rapp said with a smirk. “I don’t like the braid and the blue dress.” But she didn’t stop there. Laughing, she added, “Also, she’s kind of annoying to me. It’s OK, girl, just relax.”
Elsa, voiced by Broadway legend Idina Menzel in the original 2013 Disney film, became a cultural icon thanks to Frozen‘s smash success and the anthem “Let It Go,” which climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. While the character won over millions of fans with her icy powers and message of self-acceptance, Rapp’s take reminds us that not everyone is under Elsa’s spell.
That bold attitude is part of what’s made Rapp such a standout voice in both music and acting. She’s already proven she’s no stranger to iconic roles — her performance as Regina George in Mean Girls was a scene-stealing return to the character she first embodied on Broadway. But clearly, she’s selective about the roles she takes on — and Elsa isn’t on her dream list.
In the same interview, Rapp touched on more than just fairy tale characters. When Ziwe brought up reports that rapper Tory Lanez had recently been stabbed in prison, Rapp didn’t hold back. “I feel like a lot of people get stabbed, and that’s OK,” she said candidly. “Maybe we should be doing it more. Maybe we should be stabbing more.” Her comment, while intentionally provocative in Ziwe’s satirical style of interviewing, echoed the strong support she’s shown for Megan Thee Stallion, who was shot by Lanez in 2020. Rapp has previously said, “If anybody tries her when it comes to that sorry a– man, it’s a do or die fight for me.”
Beyond the headlines, Rapp is gearing up for a big summer with her next musical release. Her sophomore album Bite Me drops August 1, following the buzzworthy single “Leave Me Alone,” which she debuted live at the 2025 American Music Awards in May. The new music promises to deliver more of the bold, emotionally raw sound fans first fell in love with on her 2023 debut Snow Angel, which peaked at No. 44 on the Billboard 200.
With her fearless attitude, powerhouse vocals, and sharp sense of humor, Reneé Rapp continues to shake up the pop landscape — one blue dress-free performance at a time.
