A new preview of Elton John’s documentary titled “Never Too Late” features the musician reflecting on his time spent working with John Lennon, saying, “It was a dream come true”
There is a new preview available online for the documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, which is being produced by Disney+ and focuses on the historic partnership that Elton John had with John Lennon in the middle of the 1970s. During the time when John Lennon was working on his studio album Walls and Bridges in 1974, the two famous musicians collaborated on a number of songs, the most notable of which being the hugely successful duet “Whatever Gets You Through the Night.”
The video clip includes interviews from the past with John Lennon and John Lennon, as well as a fresh talk with Elton, in which he explains how the partnership came about. It also discusses the historic visit that the legendary member of the Beatles made as a guest performer at a concert that John gave at Madison Square Garden in New York City in November 1974, just after “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” became the most popular song on the charts.
In the beginning of the tape, there is footage of an interview that John Lennon gave to Bob Harris, a presenter for the BBC. Harris mentioned to John that he appeared to enjoy working with Elton while he was in Los Angeles.
The response from Lennon was, “Oh, yeah.” To tell you the truth, Elton and I are quite close. After that, we listen to an audio recording from the past in which John recalls specifics of his work with John Lennon, which is complemented with photographs of the two of them when they were working together.
Wall and Bridges were played on some crude tapes that he played. To put it simply, it’s just the raw tracks,” Elton acknowledged. The song ‘Whatever Gets You Through the Night’ was instantly played in the background. This is when he asked me if I would be willing to come down to the studio and perform some background vocals. I responded with a “Yeah.” As we listened to the tune again through the large speakers, I remarked, “Oh, it could really benefit from a little bit of piano it.” As a result, he said, “All right, proceed.” Following that, he uttered the words, “Well… let’s sing it as a duet.”
Regarding how Elton Lennon was able to perform beside him
Elton then went on to discuss how thrilled he was to get the opportunity to collaborate with John Lennon in a new interview section. “I was very nervous, but that was a dream come true for me,” Elton added. “It was a dream come true.” Do you know that I had the opportunity to pass away and enter heaven? I rode my bicycle to Hatch End, which is a district in London that is close to his childhood home, in order to obtain the album of The Beatles. Now, I am playing on his record, and I am having the finest time and the most fun with him.
After that, Elton remembered the well-known events that caused John Lennon to accompany him to his show at Madison Square Garden. I told them, ‘Listen, this is a record that is number one.’ “And he responded with a clear “No, no,”” Elton said. I then proceeded to say, “Listen, if it makes it to the top spot, you are going to have to come on stage with me.” In addition, he never in his wildest dreams imagined that it would ever reach the top spot. When it reached the top spot, he did not make any attempt to avoid taking responsibility for it.
The song “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart on November 16, 1974 at its peak performance. The 28th of November was the day that Elton ascended the stage. This song, along with two Beatles classics, “I Saw Here Standing There” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” were performed throughout the event by John Lennon, who joined Elton and his band to perform.
Lennon’s last ever public performance would take place at this very moment. It’s interesting to note that in January of 1975, Elton’s studio cover version of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” which contained contributions from John Lennon, went on to become the most popular song on the Hot 100 chart.
