In reference to the conflict between Guns N’ Roses and Metallica, “There were so many problems at the time”
Guns N’ Roses is a band that has caused a contentious debate among members of the rock scene. In spite of the fact that they have the ability to perform at Wembley Stadium or headline Glastonbury Festival, which is evidence of their vast appeal, they are not without their critics, which include competing bands. Axl Rose, the band’s frontman, is a particularly polarizing figure who has earned the ire of a great number of individuals over the course of his career. Notably, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, was extremely critical of Guns N’ Roses, which culminated in a confrontation that took place behind the scenes at the MTV Awards in 1992. In addition, Chris Cornell allegedly made a derogatory statement about Rose, referring to him as a “obstacle” that hindered him from appreciating Guns N’ Roses.
Now that their wild hijinks are firmly in the past, Guns N’ Roses have established themselves as elder gentlemen in the rock ‘n’ roll genre. Despite this, they were infamous for their reputation while they were at the height of their hell-raising activities and continuously caused disruption. The band Metallica has never been considered to be angels. On account of this, the moment that the two rock giants went on tour together ought to have been a moment that people will never forget, but instead it was a total nightmare.
1992 was the year when the two bands went on tour together, performing a series of engagements that took them to stadiums all over the continent of North America. Matt Sorum, who had previously served as the drummer for Guns N’ Roses, stated that the journey was difficult to say the least. An interview that he gave in 2019 to The Desert Sun was when he addressed the destructive competitive atmosphere that existed between the two bands: It was Axl’s ambition to conquer the world, and he did not hesitate to express his desire to do so. After that, Lars Ulrich appeared, and he had the ambition to dominate the entire world. Because we are the most powerful people in the world, we told them, “You are going to have to open for us.” They engaged in quite a bit of competition with us.
In spite of the fact that both bands possessed a competitive mentality that should have pushed them to bring their A-games in order to demonstrate their dominance, they were unable to leave this competition on the stage and then bond over beers afterward. Clearly, Rose harbored resentment for Metallica as a result of the tour, and he made his feelings about the band extremely obvious many years later. In response to a question about cartoons that was asked during a light-hearted question and answer session, the singer for Guns N’ Roses stated, “My favorite cartoon characters are Metallica and Slash.”
The public was ignorant that such a rivalry existed until Rose’s comment, which led to the airing of the dirty laundry. Although the problems between the two bands originated from their first tour together in the early 1990s, the public was uninformed of the existence of such a rivalry until his comment. In a short time after that, Rose’s remarks were read aloud to James Hetfield during an interview. Hetfield, the vocalist for Metallica, responded by saying, “(Guns N Roses) are a different type of band – and I use the word ‘band’ loosely.” There is a guy and a few more males involved.” In order to provide further context for his remarks, it is important to note that Slash and Duff McKagan had temporarily quit Guns N’ Roses at this point in time. This meant that Axl Rose was the only member of the original lineup who was still active.
Furthermore, in an interview with Kerrang, Kirk Hammett of Metallica made the implication that Rose was the source of the issues that they were encountered with the tour. Hammett disclosed, “That tour was extremely stressful due to the fact that there were as many problems as there were.” You never really knew at that point in time whether Axl felt like he was going to play the show or not, whether he was going to be on time or not, or whether there was going to be an issue with the actual show or not. All of these things were unknown to you. It was something that drove everyone absolutely insane.
In spite of the fact that Rose had initially made a negative comment about Metallica, Guns N’ Roses continued to cancel gigs on a regular basis or arrive several hours late. Furthermore, it is possible that he suffered from a little sense of resentment regarding the path that Metallica had taken in comparison to his own band, which had lost their cultural significance.
However, despite the fact that the 2000s were a challenging decade for Guns N’ Roses, the band has been able to embark on a victory lap that spans the whole decade despite the fact that Slash and McKagan returned in 2016. They have, for the most part, avoided controversy, and Rose appears to have matured in comparison to the version of himself that Metallica had to deal with while they were on tour. The only exception to this is the rare show that might be cancelled due to illness. However, you shouldn’t keep your fingers crossed that the two bands will be touring together in the near future.
